Autoimmune diseases are conditions in which the immune system makes a mistake: instead of removing a “invaders” such as bacteria, viruses or damaged tissues, it attacks normal healthy body tissue (self). Over the last twenty years, disease-modifying medications (“DMARDs”) that calm or block over-active facets of immune system have advanced autoimmune disease treatment. In the future, autonomic and peripheral nervous system stimulation may prove able to address autoimmune disease. Acupuncture shares this mechanism, and has long aimed to support the immune system. Since Traditional Chinese Medicine can help address inflammatory pain issues, it can support, but not supplant, conventional/Western/pharmaceutical autoimmune disease treatment.
